Suede – Coming Up (1996) Eac+Flac+Cue Sheet

Suede's third album, and their first without main songwriter Bernard Butler, lacked none of their trademark glam rock and catchy melodies, but, crucially, it discarded the pomposity and indulgence that marred DOG MAN STAR. Instead, boostedby Richard Oakes' inventive guitar work and the arrival of Neil Codling on keyboards, they presented a sparsely produced collection of Bowie-tinged pop songs. Brett Anderson's favourite lyrical themes--bored youth, casual sex, seedy urban life ("peepshows and freakshows") and escape from it—enjoyed free rein, but were predominantly framed within raunchy rockers rather than gloomy ballads. With the likes of "Trash", "Filmstar" and "She", Suede firmly established themselves as the godfathers of indie glam and offered some classic pop into the bargain.

Bent – Programmed To Love (2001) Flac / Cue sheet / EAC Log

Humour. Not enough of it in electronic music, or so they say. Well, thank goodness for Programmed To Love because as it says on the sleeve notes-"They are Bent". Obvious innuendo aside, the duo are actually bent in the sense that their approach to making electronic music is seriously skewed. The two are Masters of Whimsy, building lush soundscapes from humorous dialogue, fey electronica and even a few frisky efforts like the thinly veiled metaphor for sodomy that is "Chocolate Star". As listening experiences go, the sample-based Programmed to Love is a genuine pleasure. Blankets of melody rise and fall gently over innocuous rhythms, with the odd cosmic sound thrown in for good measure. The duo allegedly locked themselves in a studio for a couple of weeks with just their equipment and a load of vodka for this album, but while some of the tracks bear an amusing, crapulous quality (such as the now classic tune "Swollen", the folkish, almost unearthly "Private Road" (featuring vocalist Zoe Johnston) and the lewd "Chocolate Star"), many of the tracks here are simply enigmatic and charming. From the acoustic chug of "Cylons In Love," the funky "Invisible Pedestrian" and the subtly sweeping feel of "I Remember Johnny", this is a very original and captivating album that posits a genuinely alternative sound to the likes of other downtempo acts like Air, Zero 7 and Royksopp.--Paul Sullivan

    Babybird Discography (mp3.)

Babybird - the original Lofi Recordings - Vbr 192 kbps mp3s'-6 album box set

Long before 'You're Gorgeous' catapulted Babybird into pop notoriety, he was recording around 400 songs in his house on a 4-track, using a cheap keyboard, a questionable guitar and his own very eccentric voice.
This may not sound like a great purchase, but the lo-fi music is considered by many to be Stephen Jones' best work. After listening to this collection, it's easy to see why. The music pushes the primitive recording equipment to the limit, and as a lyricist, Stephen Jones has a wonderfully cynical view.
The highlight album is 'Fatherhood', with it's 20 brooding tales of love won, love lost, and all the tat inbetween, but all of the first three albums are definitely potential classics. 'Dying Happy' is an interesting experiment - comprised mostly of instrumentals, but significantly darker than its predecessors. Great listen, though. 'Petrol Cigarette' is amazing.
'The Black Album' is a wonderful finish to the first phase of Jones' lo-fi career, and this box set is, quite frankly, a bargain. If you can get it, do, and enjoy the sound of one of the most original artists in years. Try to ignore the impact of 'You're Gorgeous'. One thing you learn from the personal comments Jones adds to this collection, is that he tries to ignore it almost every day.Amazon Reviewer

    Babybird - ugly beautiful - Vbr 192 kbps mp3s'

This is one of those albums you find while you're wandering aimlessly in the music store, just checking out whatever they've got on the listening booths. And then you snap out of your fog as the first track starts up, because it's one of the most beautiful melodies you've ever heard, with these sort of rough, sort of plaintive, sort of smirky vocals that, frankly, you just can't stop listening to. You are haunted by this album, even as you drift through the store, listening to snippets of other songs. So because you just know that you couldn't possibly live without this album, you buy it, and listen to certain tracks obsessively, irritating some and delighting others of your household & acquaintance, who also buy it. One caveat: you can't really listen to the whole thing in one sitting, because some of the later songs on the album are not super-high quality, and to be honest, the vocals can grate on one's nerves after a while. It's all worth it, though, to get an earful of the tuneful excellence which characterizes most of the album. Amazon Reviewer

    Babybird - Bugged - Vbr 192 kbps mp3s'

Insights into the world of Stephen Jones, the heart and mind of Babybird, have always happened upon a fascination with the dark side--transexuality, paedophilia, necrophilia and the kids who sniff glue behind the bike-sheds. So it's perverse that Bugged, Babybird's eighth offering, is a return to hearth and home--an album about family values. "I love my mum, and I love my dad" squawks Jones, on "The F-Word", "I wanna have all that they never had". Accordingly, Bugged jettisons Jones's more difficult musical experiments. The lumpen band has gone, with Jones returning to the studio alone--and it's an approach that turns out a number of dreamy, genial, hi-fidelity pop gems. "Getaway" comes in operatic wide-screen, replete with parping trumpets, while "Out Of Sight" comes with echoes of the laid back country of Embrace's "Hooligan". Bugged is Babybird's most ambitious, most consistent and most upbeat album. --Louis Pattison

    Babybird - There's Something Going On - Vbr 192 kbps mp3s'

Yes this is Babybird, yes this is Stephen Jones, and those in the know are aware that he will never appeal to a wide audience. But if you want thought provoking, intelligent lyrics; dark, sometimes disturbing themes; an eclectic mix of melodic and jangly or shuffling and sparse rhythms, this album is for you. 'If You'll Be Mine' is an outstanding track that should have sold better on its release and ridden high in the charts. 'Back together, 'Take Me Back' and 'I was Always Here' are classic Babybird. The album ends with the haunting, 'There's Something Going On' which captures a heartbreaking yet accepting reaction to infidelity. For those who know only 'You're Gorgeous' (the sentiment was sadly misinterpeted by the majority and was actually a common wedding day tune at the time!!) this album might prove too heavy. But for those 'in the know'..........this is, the magnificent Babybird. Amazon Reviewer

Wow! The master of hooky multi-harmonied pop genius is back and how?!?!. This album is simply stunning. Full of wonderful lyrics and quirky production touches and all the things that make Stephen Jones the most underated artist in the UK today.
From the heart string tugging plead against consumerism "Too Much" through power pop love letters of "Snails" and "Lighter 'n' Spoon" he delivers in spades.

The Nightfly Trilogy Donald Fagen Advanced 24-bit PCM stereo 48000Hz/96000Hz MVI disc rip -Flac + Cue sheets

    Untitled-10

    Amazon.com
    ALBUM OVERVIEW:
As half of seminal pop/jazz/rock outfit Steely Dan, Donald Fagen is one of contemporary music’s most inventive masterminds. His solo career leveraged strengths of his writing, producing and performing partnership with Walter Becker in Dan, and explored new territory along a more personal singer-songwriter trajectory. With his 1982 solo debut The Nightfly, Fagen won massive critical acclaim for a fluid, soulful work he described as representing "certain fantasies that might have been entertained by a young man growing up in the remote suburbs of a northeastern city during the late fifties and early sixties, i.e., one of my general height, weight and build." Reviewing it for Rolling Stone, David Fricke wrote, "this album is about dreams . . . Fagen conjures a world where all things are possible, even to a kid locked in his bedroom." 1993’s Kamakiriad continues Fagen’s sonic journey by following the adventures of a mythic lead character touring the world in a fant! astic car. With 2006’s GRAMMY®-winning MorphThe Cat, Fagen delivers a masterpiece rivaling Nightfly’s potency that Rolling Stone called his "catchiest, most immediate compositions in decades." Together, these works spotlight the ongoing genius of a true music visionary — on Rhino’s stunning new MVI editions, they’re a sensory revelation.

Donald Fagen's 1982 solo debut extends the sleek, smart pop craft of his work with Steely Dan into the realm of the concept album, taking the Dan's penchant for intricate plotting, evocative narrative voices, and allusive imagery to the logical next step. Fagen's connective thread is futurist nostalgia for the "New Frontier" as anticipated from the prosperous vantage point of late-'50s America. He romanticizes a brave new world of technology in the sultry diorama of "I.G.Y.," celebrating the coming glories of the Atomic Age. He then filters that view through his own suburban adolescence--a would-be seduction in a fallout shelter, the siren song of a graveyard-shift jazz DJ, a not-quite-hard-boiled noir adventure ("The Goodbye Look") that borrows its title from an early '60s Ross MacDonald mystery. Song for song, the set's a stunner and stands apart from Steely Dan thanks to a unique, poignant romanticism embodied in Fagen's yearning "Maxine" and a creamy update of Dion & the Belmonts' "Ruby Baby." --Sam Sutherland

Morph The Cat 24-bit Advanced 96000Hz PCM Stereo MVI Disc rip - flac+cue sheets

    Amazon.com
For all the delight their fans take in parsing their wry and obstinately obscure lyrics, Steely Dan wouldn't command the kind of following they have if they weren't such consummate craftsmen in shaping melodies, layering keyboard and guitar effects and applying sophisticated doses of jazz, funk and soul. On his own albums, of which Morph the Cat is only the third--and the first since 1993's Kamakiriad--the group's sardonic co-mastermind Donald Fagen avails himself to more socially observant and personally revealing themes. But here, too, it's the music's dark shimmer and bumptious grooves that get under your skin, carrying his serious intentions with them. The grandly allusive "Morph," named after what Fagen describes as a "vast, ghostly cat-thing" that hovers in the Manhattan sky (not unlike Woody Allen's catty mother in "New York Stories"), reflects with no loss of irony or oblique meaning on the angst and sense of loss felt in the post-9/11 world. There are visions of death--including his own--and political oppression. There's a comic romantic encounter with a female airport security guard and a reverent faceoff with the ghost of Ray Charles, whose essence is nailed: "Well, you bring some church but you leave no doubt/As to what kind of love you love to shout about." Even when Fagen's hipster sensibility flirts with preciousness, the music is so richly, radiantly alive, the collective power of the songs can't be denied. --Lloyd Sachs
